Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
