As confusing as it is to witness the president try to upend the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of animosity who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

The obvious and straightforward truth that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a form of radical love focused on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: engaging for the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Conflict for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to see the steadfast resistance to Trump arise during the previous year.
